Great news: After the exclusive preview of Diabetes Connekt for ADEA members, we will soon launch Diabetes Connekt and invite health professionals as well as TAFE and university course coordinators across Australia to join us. The public launch will be on World Diabetes Day, 14 November. Diabetes Connekt is the first live capability-building platform for diabetes care. It houses a forum for health professionals interested in diabetes care, current evidence-based teaching resources for course coordinators, and the Capability Framework for Diabetes Care.
ADEA is the peak body for more than 1600 Credentialled Diabetes Educators (CDEs). CDEs are the experts in providing diabetes education and care across Australia. Dr Murfet is a past ADEA President, a nurse practitioner at the Tasmanian Health Service, and a Visiting Fellow at UTS. Dr Murfet led the evidence-based and codesigned implementation of the Capability Framework for Diabetes Care.
'Diabetes Connekt will allow CDEs and other health professionals to connect and network, resulting in better health outcomes for people living with diabetes. The Capability Framework for Diabetes Care, developed by Dr Giuliana Murfet and her Advisory Group, is a major step toward developing a more skilled and flexible diabetes-care workforce across the spectrum of the health workforce,' said ADEA President Amanda Bartlett.
Diabetes is one of the most significant challenges facing the Australian healthcare system, with an estimated 1.9 million Australians living with diabetes today, a number that is expected to rise even further in the coming years. A dynamic, connected workforce with the skills and knowledge required to care for people living with diabetes is essential to minimise the risks associated with the condition.
'The Capability Framework for Diabetes Care and the associated resources will guide the practice of nurses, allied health professionals, Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Health Workers and Practitioners, pharmacists, midwives, health assistants and support workers when delivering care to people living with diabetes in Australia. Every day, approximately a third of people accessing any healthcare service live with diabetes, so it's crucial that all health professionals are equipped with diabetes capabilities. The Capability Framework is world-leading and will increase the capabilities of the healthcare workforce in Australia to deliver quality diabetes care,' said Dr Giuliana Murfet.
